Burial was definately a technique used as early as the mid-50's. I know of at least two Corsairs that were buried after landing accidents only to be "unearthed" a couple of decades later still in 3D condition ;) One of them is set to fly again, maybe this year believe it or not.

I do agree it was probably the very rare excetion to the rule when it came to burying though. Awful lot of work just to dispose of what was then considered junk. Other than smelting, I would guess the most popular way to dispose of the stuff "in the field" would be to burn it.

There is still the report of the ex-Goodyear representative that oversaw the burial of a number of junk Corsairs and other types at a South Pacific base just following WWII. I hear the guy can walk you to the spot where the planes were buried, but because of our "historic-minded" friends at the US Navy Historical Center, no one is willing to even consider touching a shovel to the ground. More war veteran aircraft just waiting to be ressurrected, and no hope for their future at all. Sad stuff :(
