Not too sure that the Halifax was designed to be an alrounder. I think that she (and the Lancaster) evolved from requirement B12/36 for a four engined bomber, which resulted in the Stirling.
However, I think that as the Lancaster proved to be more proficient/adaptable as a Bomber, the others were relegated (not meaning to be derogatory) to other theatres of operation.
