Just a quick note on Vultures - as I understand it, Handley Page were asked by the Air Ministry to use Merlins rather than Vultures due to fears about the production capacity at RR. I forget where I read it ("Design and Development of the Avro Lancaster" possibly), but I seem to recall reading that HP were quite upset about it...
Also the spec that the Lanc and Halifax evolved from was the P13/36, which called for a Twin engined bomber (I won't go through the full detail on it).
The B12/36 spec was the spec that Supermarine built their prototype (destroyed in an air raid), and that Shorts built the Stirling to.
