Jim,
Ours (Olympic Flight Museum)is the only one with the airstair mod. I doubt that anyone else would cut a hole that size in the side of their Corsair. I don't know why the CWH chose to do it that way, but I am sure they must have had a good reason. The plane has more restrictions as far as aerobatics and stuff like that goes, than a regular Corsair. Even though quite a bit of metal was cut out, the work is very good and I am sure it is probably just as strong as it was before. The back seat is from a T-28 in case anyone is wondering.
I have flown in another Corsair with the more common back seat, and it is much easier to get in and out of. Not to mention that you actually have forward visibility. The down side to that modification is that you have to take out the armor plate. That doubles as a turn over structure.
I do know that if the only way I could ever get another ride was to squeeze in the wheel well, I could do it!
