Could you recognize the lump?

All of the side-scan images I've seen have all been surface only, where you need to recognize the lump to figure out what you have.
Sonic detection methods work on the principle of density in the medium. The density of the water is so different than the river bottom, if you tune for the water (frequency and amplitude), you won't detect anything under the surface. You would need a probe in contact with the river bottom that could detect density variation in the "soil" at the river bottom itself I would think.
I have a passing knowledge of ultrasonics (Non-Destructive Inspection), but no direct experience in underwater survey, so please take my explanation with a grain of salt...I could be completely wrong! :-)
: Can I locate a Merlin, in approx 20' of water, but possibl
: y buried under 10' of light river alluvial material, using
: a towed fish of some description, or am i going to need a
: magnetometer?
