Joe Sheil has got the time line wrong regarding the Rolls-
: Royce R-engine. It was developed from the H-engine, also k
: nown as the Buzzard, for the 1929 and 1931 Schneider Troph
: y Races, was then shelved and eventually dusted off and de
: veloped into the Griffon.
: It actually preceeded the Merlin!
The timeline I have would have been right. The Merlin was a low power engine and would not have been able to compete at the time. I doubt they would have been able to get 1400 hp without the war. The "High Speed Spitfire" was a dissapointment and never went very fast. RR and Supermarine would probably have dusted off the S6B typr R, and begun making a racer. It would have been a griffon almost, but with the slow gestation of jets and the like, Their long range plan would have been to have the Crecy in service by 1950. I just believe that they would have grabbed a winning engine with better power...
