Interesting question David. I guess it would depend if the race were piston or jet powered.
If piston, then the following.
F2G Corsair
Martin Baker MB-5
Tempest V
P-51H
Shinden
If jet powered, well, I guess you really are limited to the choosing from the six jet fighters that made it by into production by '45. My guess would be the following...
Me-262
Meteor
Vampire
P-80
He-162
.... if jet powered it would probably be a case of whom ever made it across the finish line without blowing up, or falling apart! The P-80's and F-86's that raced at Cleveland left all sorts of pieces in their path!
