: Supposing these are totally stock machines do you care to
: guess a winner in each category
.....
Phew... that's a hard one. I don't have actual test numbers in front of me, so it is mostly guessing. I'd say they would all have a fair shake at winning, and that it would depend a lot on the quality of the pilot. However, if I have to make a choice I'd say probably the Shinden for the piston aircraft... if it didn't fall apart. It should have gone like a bat out of hell, both being very light and having a powerful engine/propellor combination. It should have had an excellent turn radius too.
For the jets, I would imagine that the winner would be the one that didn't fall to bits... which probably excludes the German aircraft (engines for the '262; engines AND airframe for the '162). The early P-80 had a lot of problems with the airframe and engine, as well as being underpowered, so I doubt it would win. The meteor could go a bit faster in a straight line, but I am sure that the vampire could out-turn it. Don't know how well the vampire's construction would do in a tight turning race though, so it's hard to predict if it would stay together. However, I would pick the vampire for the jet race.
Cheers,
Richard
