Gregory,
Yes, it looks like you were the author of the March 1992(?), page 24, article "Return from Extinction" by Gregory Alegi. Thank you for the updates and I will check the website given.
What is the "Ali d'Italia" series?
My Father was a tail gunner in the 12th Air Force, 301st Bomb Group on a September 2, 1943 mission to bomb the Bolzano R.R. Bridge and Yards. He wrote me that they "were near the 44th parallel near Carrara and Massa over 300 miles from the target when they first saw the fighters. The bombardier had seen their dust from their take-off and had watched them climb to our altitude as we were far below bombing altitude." The records show that 12 to 15 fighters were encountered, Me-109s and Re 2001s. My Dad was credited with one Re 2001 probable. Another gunner had a confirmed destroyed Re 2001.
I wonder if it was more likely that these were Re 2005s on this late date?
Any ideas? Was there a base with Reggiane fighters near this described location that you know of?
