I believe the parts Kevin got that were second rate were
done for NMNA by an outside source. I saw the inside of the
wings on 2106 done by the outside source and they were as you describe; still had some mud in places. NMNA redid the ones on 2106 as well as some other areas in house. That is
one reson 2106 took so long to finish. The guys at NMNA
wanted it RIGHT and that necessitated taking it apart amd
redoing several areas.
The Tomahawk they have was done by another vendor and
yes it does have some issues. The SB2U-2 was done in house
for the most part. Like the SBD it was taken apart and put together several times. For example I remember after they got the canopy back from an outside fabricator they took it all apart to replace the Phillips screws with the proper slot head type. Finding those screwd was quite a story in
itself.
I guess it's safe to say NMNA's restorations are not
perfect but the ones they do themselves get better with
each plane. We must also remember that unlike Kevin's
SBD, the Pensacola birds aren't going to fly again.
