Joe - Interestingly the wing failure of the C-130 happened within 6 inches of the original wing failure crack found on the Lockheed test specimen all those years ago. The crack itself was under a doubler and as such very hard to find.
This area was a known problem and work had been carried out in the past on this area by a maintainance operation.
Basically what we are talking about is very rapid flexing
of the wing when they are unloaded . One way of reducing this would be to reduce the loads carried by these aircraft
but that means more aircraft to do the same job!
I think that the value of the remaining Privateer's is now very low and I would like to think that some could be traded back to the military for C-130's etc.
They could then take up roles at various base museums
and be a worthy tribute to an underated type.
