: All hail the mighty JRM MARS! Now why don't we build turb
: ine versions of those?

Since you asked, Forest Industries Flying Tankers did look at converting the Mars to turbine power around 15 years ago. Engines would have been taken from an Electra, and flat-rated for 2500 hp -- same as the R-3360, to avoid changing the aircraft's performance envelope. With a TBO around 10,000 hours, the derated engines would also have been a mechanic's dream.

Why wasn't it done? Well, one imeptus to change the engines was that the shop FIFT used to overhaul the radials was getting out of the business. But FIFT eventually found another source for the same work. Also, each aircraft would have been out of service for two years as the fuel system was converted for Jet-A.

Unlike most fire bombers out there, the Mars carries enough water to end a small blaze on the first drop. And with a 7200-gallon load they're practically loafing. Look at the fuel and cargo loads the JRM's hauled in US Navy service, by way of comparison.

Last I read in the local paper, both Mars will be back in service for the 2003 flying season. The current owner, Timberwest, is still hoping to offset the annual operating costs with ad hoc charter revenue. Visit the site below if you need one on a fire near you. :^)
