Tony,
In this field of work you really learn to improvise. That's the same thing we do if we are looking for underwater wrecks. It is also much easier to search more accurately than sitting in a unstable boat. Problem is that we do not have severe winters every year (last winter we had only one day we could walk on ice). I keep my hopes up for the coming winter.
