I thought that the tail wheels were solid! Is this right?
:
No, we have the tailwheel of DV286 in our museum and although it has the twin contact tyre, there is an inner tube inside.
Some American fighters did have solid tailwheels though such as the P-51 and P-47 IIRC.
Converting a Lancaster into a Manchester, mmmm I still think that would make a magnificent project, the structure of the Mk X and VII is the same other than wiring looms etc but the conversion would be straighforward.
Then again some other of my pet dreams are converting a Beaufighter with Merlins, A Sea Fury using a Griffon 58 with contra props (like Hawkers did), finding (if possible) a pair of Attacker wings in Pakistan and fitting them to a Spitfire fuselage recreating the prototype Spiteful (Peter A also has this dream), using another set of Hastings wings to recreate another Halifax. Fitting a set of derelict Sunderland wings (Christmas Island) to a newbuilt fuselage recreating a Stirling, and badgering the RAF-Museum to donate their sections to the Stirling Project, same as the Whitley sections to Elliott. The lists goes on and on. But then again it doesn't hurt to dream does it.
Cheers
Cees
