You made an interesting point Cees, with respect to My Gal Sal. Interestingly, in My Gal Sal's case, the ice around her actually receded by about thirty feet, so that she actually sat on a column of ice about 30 or 40 feet higher than her surroundings.... this is actually what led her to be so badly damaged, as a gale flipped her off this perch at some point. She had been relatively unscathed up until the sixties I believe! Maybe all of the ice around My Gal Sal sublimed into the atmosphere, making it damp... was blown down-wind and dumped all over Glacier Gal and her compadres! Makes you wonder, doesn't it!?
