Tony - My thoughts are that this machine has clearly been destroyed . To rebuild it is fine and I have no doubts that it can be done. But the problem we get is a new TE566 appears which clearly cannot be that original machine. The warbird community will argue that you can rebuild anything and that is clearly true - I do not dispute that. What I would like however is the recognition that it is a new machine and not a repair.
Many will argue that warbird owners don't care about the machine's provenance -thats not true. A know the owner
of a D-Day +1 aircraft -he will not sell it at any cost and he is acutely aware that he is owning a piece of history.
Luckily for him he know's her history from war end and she is that aircraft - no doubt about it.
I find it an amusing notion that someone who pays a
$1 million dollars for a machine doesn't care for it's history ! Does this apply to the TFC P-51D from Sweden - I think they were very aware of her history and that was the reason for her purchase.
I mentioned in a earlier post that the CAA should be more involved in the inspection stage and I still believe that. The people who are frightened of the CAA usually have a hidden agenda. My reason is not from an airworthiness point of view but from the fact that a aircraft is registered with them and the is no reason why they couldn't
certify it's content at the start of the rebuild.
The series production of new aircraft in the U.K is under very close scrutiny and rightly so - look at how many ventures abroard run into difficulties - the is usually a good reason !
