Cees,
Both you and Joe are correct when mentioning cost but what figure is considered to be expensive.

?1m, ?4m or even ?10m, I have no idea what it would cost nor a full appreciation of the difficulties involved but is it possible that a sensible plan for new build Lancasters/Halifax's could be put together, all plans could be located/redrawn and obviously built using modern materials and engines and then approach, let's say Virgin Airlanes.

Both the mentioned frames could initially be built as the civilianised versions, which after a period of time could be retired from commercial use, once set up costs have been recovered and then converted back to their wartime spec. and operated as a Historical flight.

Isn't there a JU52 being (or was) operated under such a scheme, in South Africa?

The goodwill and interest plus the cost compared to purchasing/leasing a modern jet, may prove to be worthy of consideration on short destination flights, to some of the larger, successful independant airlines.

I appreciate that the above is most likely "pie in the sky" and that once again, I am most likely talking out of my rear end but given the choice of flying to say Manchester, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Holland or Belguim in a Lancastrian, rather than a modern jet, would get my vote (possibly not from the family though).

Again, just my two shillings worth.

Tony
