John Griffin's book lists no Boulton-Paul Defiants in Canada so my quess is that the stories are just that. The only aircraft that may come close to be misidentified as a Defiant and be in the area at the same time are Fairey Battles.
By the way, John Griffin is still alive and still researching in Ottawa. He would dearly like to republish his epic volume, with corrections and updates, but cannot convince the powers that be in our capital of it's value. I was lucky enough to run across my copy at the Aviation Bookstore in London, England, some 6 years ago! Repatriation.....it's a good thing!!
