RAFM collecting policy

Posted by Stuart on Tue Sep 03, 2002 07:54:40 PM

I've moaned about this before, but fancied another rant.

Why does the RAFM insist on sitting on such a huge number of Spitfires? At the last count they had about 10 and will eventually also get some or all of the BOBMF's 7 Spitfires. How many does one (ok two!) museum need? Hendon alone has 4 on display.

From the top of my soap box, it seems perfectly obvious that they should go all out for collecting what WW2 and pre-war aircraft they can while it is still around, using some of the Spitfires as swaps/finance.

It seems unlikely that the RAFM will struggle to acquire examples of modern types, as the RAF have learnt from past non-preservation mistakes and seem to have a policy now of gifting retired aircraft to the national museums.

So why not use the surplus Spitfires to acquire aircraft like the Boston, Wapiti etc and fund recoveries and restorations of the Halifax and so on while they can and before it is too late.

Cheers
Stuart
Might try counting the RAFM's Spitfires to try and get some sleep tonight.
