Why did the Typhoon not survive very long, and in fact only in one static? The Typhoon was a troubled aircraft and I don't believe that the Typhoon and Tornado ever cleared their names amongst pilots. The summer of 1942 was when suspicion began to focus on the many unexplained fatal crashes the type had. The crash of R7692 11.8.42 began to solve the mystery, but by then the name was tainted. The failure of the Tornado and the Vulture and the emergence of the Tempest consigned the Typhoon to the scrapheap. The Typhoon had a great record in ground attack and was a significant part of the RAF war effort. Unfortunately there were many other types that were less troublesome, and had Merlins and Griffons up front. Within a year or two even they would have to fight to survive against obsolescence. Building a Typhoon today would take some doing. But with Flugwerk beginning wing production, I am saving for something else...
