Peter - My definition of something that is 'brand new' is that the vast majority of it is new or indeed constructed from parts that have never been used. Of course we can all argue the point that a Merlin is a large core of the product that is old but in reality most have been through the works a number of times that I don't think they have a large number of their recipriocating parts that they had when built. Regards some of the other parts you describe -well I believe you can buy new wheels and believe many would - I don't believe in originality instead of safety.
On your other points we had a discussion on this machine a few months ago and at that stage you described that by adding an identity to her now you effectively removed her from being considered an 'orphan'. Now you state that if she didn't have this part of firewall added to her she wouldn't have been sold to her new owner !!!
Well thank God that Harry Stenger was willing to buy her without an identity in the first place - he deserves to be applauded . He obviously recognised the beauty of Dick's handiwork .
Lastly I am not surprised at all about the level of skin replacement that is carried out to get a 'gate guard' Spitfire for example - the basis as I am sure we both agree on however is that the framework structure tends to be reasonably intact. Regarding how low the percentage is on your 'cherished flying Spitfires' - well you have the wrong guy I am afraid Peter - I am completely dispassionate about them and I would rather see a 'Mosi' fly any day !!!
