I think a metalurgist could explain it better, all metals suffer to a certain extent to heat ageing (ageing)Aluminium suffers mor than most others. The older it gets the harder it gets.I also work on wrecks out of newguinea and local that have been both burried and in fresh water. All of it gets used as paterns and either kept fo later projects or discarded. The reason it is not used is because it all suffers from diferent stages of enbritelment. You don't notice it so much until you try to straighten it or bend it and it just snaps. The other thing you notice with aged aluminium is if you fold it or as i said straighten it.Intergranular corrosian soon sets in.If you need to know more about it there is plenty of stuff on google.
