This is just my own reasoning but I think the major difference would be how solid the object being hit. The wing surfaces of the DC-3 were probably not terribly resistant to the propellers and thus probably didn't torque the engines, something the impact with a runway would do.

This accident probably only messed up the propellors and not the engine.
