I am no expert, but I do know that within days the CWH had the propellers at a shop in Toronto for inspection and repair. I surmise that they were able to salvage the propellers. Inspections would have been done on the engines and the engine mounts as well.
The Lanc is registered with Special Certificate of Airworthiness - Limited, so I imagine that the requirements as far as inspections and repair would not be as stringent as a commercially operated aircraft.
Also, the propellers mpactedithe aileron and then the wing of the DC-3. I would imagine that being fabric and aluminum they would be more forgiving than an ashpalt runway.
IMHO The Lanc crew probably worked swiftly to recover quickly from an embarassing situation.
I also believe in this case as in many situations the actual damage was exaggerated by some, make the story more dramatic. I read one post on another board that the spar may have even been damaged!
I thought that I heard many years ago that when the Lanc was restored a fifth engine was overhauled to serve as a back up. Maybe they replaced that left outboard engine with the backup - just a guess.
