I now have a Sony DSC-F707 5-megapixel camera. It is the first autofocus camera I've ever used.
What I have learned to do is to disable the autofocus and prefocus the camera for the flying shots as the autofocus either isn't fast enough or hunts for the aircraft speck in the sky. I also use full manual exposure and set the exposure for the aircraft, not the sky which is constantly changing in intensity as you pan the camera.
I usually switch to autofocus, then manually set the shutter speed to get good prop motion on my ground shots.
Most cameras are designed to take nice pictures of close in subjects (like people), not high speed aircraft at considerable distance. My camera takes great "snapshots" out of the box, but it has taken me a while to figure out what this camera likes to give good quality aerial shots.
I think I will be selling all my 35mm SLR equipment very soon!
