Actually, the insurance company will sell the wreckage to the highest bidder. Happens all the time. Their interest is in recovering as much of their loss as possible. With historic aircraft they undoubtedly will sell them to the highest bidder and it will likely be restored to flying condition again, even if only a few scraps and the paperwork identity are used. There would be many fewer Mustangs and others flying today if we forbid the insurance companies from trying to recover from their loss. This would of course mean even higher insurance rates for the those of us who operate these aircraft.
In my opinion high insurance rates and the long term availability of fuel are the issues warbird enthusiasts should be the most worked up about. That is what the operators are concerned about. Not where the data plate or their wing tip came from.
