Hi Karen,
Sorry, you use words like "fondness" and "love", but I'm afraid with me it's more of an addiction. Love can be explained--what I feel for warbirds is truly inexplicable.
As a wee lad I grew up in a small Wisconsin town due south of Oshkosh. I'd see Mustangs and Mitchells and whatnot flying to and from the show, but my folks were dirt poor and not the least bit aviation-oriented. When I was 13 my dad broke down and took me for a day; the experience was absolutely magical. This was back when the XP-51 was still flown at the show. Compared to the spitting sound of the Merlins, I thought the XP was the loveliest shape and sound in the sky.
Over the years I've had both good and bad experiences at Airventure, but the place will always hold special memories for me. That's about as close as I can date the start of my addiction. Taking my kids to Oshkosh and watching their excitement perpetuates the thrill.
Sorry for rambling,
Dan
