Karen,

I have always enjoyed your posts, and wonder if you have seen the National Geographic regarding the beaches and wrecks offshore. The amount of stuff there is really interesting, but salvagers and souvineer hunters have all left long ago. You asked if anything was sacred anymore, and it caused this post. The stuff there has never been sacred, until now. There were B-17's recovered from lakes, in good condition, and scrapped, tanks everything collected and scrapped. At Normandy we are down to the stuff thats too hard to get for scrappers, or unvaluable, thats left. The site that remains is now finally getting some due as a historical site. But its important to remember that the 1950's 60's and 70's were devastating to these places, and it was not until the late 80's that any recovery for historical sake took place.

As a side note, look at how development of this country has obliterated many civil war battlefields, and its continuing, and how few revolutionary war sites are left.

Perhaps the people move on, historians dislike it, but the mind of the people moves on. I think that these wars and inhumanities are designed to be forgotten in a few hundred years, just as the battles of antiquity are. Who knows.
Glad you got a Stearman ride, thats what started my flying career. I had 3 great Stearman landings last Monday, so I thought of you doing the same.

JOE
