I doubt that the entrepeneur in question thought twice about the historical significance of this site. I'm sure to many it is just another section of unused beach.
If there was a request to the government to utilize this area for commercial purposes, and there was a major public outcry, I say that the system worked as it is supposed to. If the government approves the request, despite the international public outcry, shame on them!
The only suggestion I have is to remain eternally vigilant...and write lots of letters!
Or, look on the bright side. Maybe this "business" story was fabricated by a famous collector secretly planning to recover all these artifacts to put on public display, while recovering the lost soldiers and returning them to their families.
: Shame on me! My history is not up to par! I had no ide
: a that Normandy had been so shamelessly salvaged for so lo
: ng!
:
: No I didn't see that piece in natioanal geographic,
: but if I have the good fortune of finding a copy, I will c
: ertainly read it!
:
: Someone, in the piece on the news last night, used t
: he phrase "hallowed ground", as you mentioned the Civil wa
: r, and Revolutionary war battlefields are other examples o
: f such. As well as Pearl Harbor, and so many other places.
: I was very upset when an attempt was made to destroy Virg
: inia battlefields, for another Disneyworld, as well as so
: much of the land surrounding Gettysburg, and Sharpsburg.
:
: Perhaps, some would like to move on and forget these p
: laces, but how can we ever move forward without rememberin
: g how we got here? We are all the sum of so many people's
: past! If not for our ancestors we wouldn't be here. Maybe
: I spend too much time in moldy old books, and on battlefie
: lds, but I feel no less respect, and gratitude to our Revo
: lutionary, and Civil War veterans then I do towards those
: still with us today.
:
: That sounded way preachier then I meant it to, but it
: is my sincere hope that todays, and tomorrow's generations
: will never lose sight of the incredible cost our freedom
: has come at, and will honor and respect the servicemen tha
: t gave so much for so many.
:
: I guess what it boils down to is this: People who will
: do anything for money or out of greed are intolerable to
: me. On our dying day is it really going to matter how much
: money we have? Some things need to be left alone, some th
: ings need to be recovered. If there were deaths involved,
: leave it alone.
:
: Thank you for the kind words. Wow, three rides in one
: day..... My legs would be like Gumby's! I have been told t
: he rubber legs get better with each additional flight. I c
: ertainly hope so!
: Best wishes,
: Karen
