AN529 ; WP-C ;
The second Fortress delivered to RAF 90 Sqn 11.5.41. ;
"Destroyed" behind enemy lines, Libya 8.11.41.
Well if this ain't one of THE most historic B17's ever !
And THE most historic B17 in existance.....if it does exist!?
AN529 was one of three RAF Fortress MK I's that went on the very first ever B17 mission to Wilhelmshaven on July 8th 1941. It was the only one out of the three to drop it's full bomb load on the correct target.
It flew nine missions with 90 Sqn over Europe before it was one of four to be sent to Shallufa in Egypt 28.10.41.
"During the first operation to targets in the Tobruk area, the veteran C-Charlie ran out of fuel, forcing Fly Off Swanson to land behind enemy lines. The crew, failing to get the aircraft to burn, machine gunned the bomb sight and other components before making a successful bid to reach British troops".
All the above from "B17 Fortress at War".
Now, is it REALLY still there?
The RAFM would just love to have it........wouldn't they?
I'm sure the RAFM would love to have that Blenheim as well Richard.......seeing as the one they have is actually a Canadian Bolingbroke.
Who has a Man in Libya ?
That Lanc in Norway certainly deserves looking at as well.
I'll post later with details of possible Russian Lancasters.
Good stuff Richard.....keep it up
Cheers
Mick
PS:- This has got to be better than talking about...........
