Oh no! Not "bdk" with another opinion... Does he think he is some kind of "know-it-all" or something? :-)
I propose that the individual parts of an aircraft be painted in authentic colors and with authentic serials for those individual parts. Thus you might have a Corsair with Australian markings on the tailcone, US marking on one wing, and UK markings on the other wing, while the cowl would have French markings. The rudder would use Honduran markings, and the newly manufactured wooden ailerons would have the Fighter Rebuilders logo on them. This should satisfy all the "internet enthusiasts" out there, with the exception of the owners and the airshow public who just want to see a flying example of the aircraft and don't care about the provenance.
Of course North American remanufactured some AT-6's to T-6G standard post-war, so which identity do we use then if we restore it to WW2 standards?
All tongue-in-cheek of course, but where do we want to draw the line on this? As long as the buyer of said aircraft does not feel it has been misrepresented, what is the harm of whatever ID has been selected? Can anyone document where a buyer has been harmed from the selection of the "wrong" ID (other than switching a data plate for the purposes of an aircraft theft of course)?
Am I the only one that feels this way?
: I must say though, I think I agree with you, about the cen
: ter section. It really is the most recognizable piece of a
: n aircraft....take the Mustang for example.... you can ver
: y easily distinguish an A, from a B, and so on by the cowl
: ing. This would also most likely be the largest section of
: the airplane as well, so if that were the defining criter
: ia it would also qualify. The only way it wouldn't is if y
: ou used the mechanical parts as your criteria for identity
: . Which I don't think would be a good choice.
: Great question!
