I must say though, I think I agree with you, about the center section. It really is the most recognizable piece of an aircraft....take the Mustang for example.... you can very easily distinguish an A, from a B, and so on by the cowling. This would also most likely be the largest section of the airplane as well, so if that were the defining criteria it would also qualify. The only way it wouldn't is if you used the mechanical parts as your criteria for identity. Which I don't think would be a good choice.
