If this was a British aeroplane may I suggest that P55 might be a factory inspector's mark from a principal or sub contractor. Inspector number 55 (Joe Smith) at P for Percival or P for Pressed Steel Group etc has inspected this item and duly passed it with traceability back to him.
Every sheetmetal item on a Spitfire is thus stamped - 6S for Supermarine or CBAF for Castle Bromwich followed underneath by the inspectors number all being in a small circle of about one quarter inch.
