Tony, you have some great ideas,

Especially the thing about inviting people from "unusual" countries like France, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Russia, Japan etc etc. There is actually quite a lot of stuff going on in these countries which very rarely is covered in magazines. Both magazines are in my opinion to focused on UK and US. The French magazine Avions have designated regular contributors from several countries, and they are all listed in the magazine. So Avions have a lot of very odd and unusual articles. Maybe Aeroplane Monthly can struck a deal to cooperate with them, like the cooperation they have with Flugzeug Classic. In this way you approach the Language issue too.

THen I have another suggestion which I've forwarded to both Fly Past and Aeroplane Monthly some years ago, to supplement imperial meassurements when describing height, weight, speed etc with the meassures in the centrimetic system whitin brackets as a service to the "alien" readers abroad. It would be so simple... I think FP might have begun to do this, haven't they? I haven't read the magazine for a long time now - I was a subscriber for almost ten years I think but, well Paul you said it all when commenting FP...

: Some nice points raised......
:
: Now, an aviation magazine, that just deals with Warbirds W
: orldwide, nothing else, just the facts ma'am? (apologies J
: oe Friday)..... that would be something else.
:
: OK, let's assume, that the Magazine is based in N New Zeal
: and, with an editor, passionate and very knowledgable abou
: t his field.
:
: Lets also assume, that the editor , would like to expand h
: is readership dramatically as all editors of course do.
:
: Now these are just some suggestions and ideas Graham
:
: 1. Rename the magazine to "World and Classic Wings Down Un
: der" with "World" appearing as freehand script diagonally
: across the word classic, so telling your readership, from
: the first point of contact, (The cover) what you're all ab
: out.
:
: 2.Translate sections of the Magazine, into a territory spe
: cific language. Japan is rapidly becoming a very important
: market, but with the exception of "Koku-Fan" I don't real
: ly see much going on there, same for France, Germany and S
: candinavia. Don't forget, Spanish is still a very importan
: t language too.
:
: 3. In conjunction with point 2. Place more content on the
: web. Maybe, just maybe, the print version of the magazine,
: should act as a "Teaser" for the riches on the website.Y
: our website, is under re-construction now, why not start?
:
: 4. Have regular contributors, for the "Secret History" and
: History sections. People such as Carl-Fredrick Geust (Und
: er the Red Star), etc.
:
: 5. How to pay for this? Exclusive content is always charge
: able. In the early days, i would recommend placing a "gist
: ed translator " on the site. Many of these are free, with
: a lot of language coverage. Approach your market, in their
: own language, and push the magazine at the same time.
:
: 6. A quarterly CD-Rom is produced, with all the exciting p
: arts on board. Interviews in Real Video, Rebuilds, photogr
: aphs, articles, Air Show reports etc. The delivery can be
: either CD-ROM or Internet download via a secure server, fo
: r those with "Turbo nutter" connections. If the content pr
: omised is good enough, and EXCLUSIVE to you, people will b
: uy, especially if the price, is a "no-brainer"
:
: 7. Readership, is measured by downloads, not by hits. If y
: our readership, is starting to become dramatic, then you h
: ave warbird owners by the goolies, not the other way round
: . Like the Music world, certain magazines, are the "Place
: to be seen" Warbird owners and operators, appreciate you c
: an turn them into stars, but only if the readership is goo
: d enough, so, strive to become the "Rolling Stone" of the
: Warbird world.
:
: 8. Yes, it will require more server pages, and more cost,
: but bandwith is coming down in price all the time. If the
: "Magazine" is published online once a month, with teasers
: throughout the month, on a constantly updated "News page"
: with "More on this in our January issue" Price $5.00, d/lo
: ad from website or buy cd-rom then it will happen.
:
: 9.If you make the majority of the content web-based, then
: you can cut certain people ot of the delivery chain and yo
: ur pocket..... errrrrrr distributors etc. I know there is
: nothing more depressing, than sale or return!
:
: 10. The actual content of the site, is up to you to decide
: , but, in my travels around the net, i have seen some SERI
: OUS websites, which are only in a foreign language... www.
: bf109.com and unsere-luftwaffe.de as two examples.
:
: There is a lot of Polish stuff too. Invite these people to
: become regular contributors, in exchange for giving their
: wesites a quick plug.
:
: at the end of it all Graham, it's up to you, but Classic c
: ould become the magazine, that stands head and shoulders a
: bove the rest.
:
: But , if you decide to do it, can we do the website? "Much
: cheapness effendi" -lol

:
: Oh, and I like Flypast, cos Ken is a good bloke, and Aerop
: lane monthly, because it feels like the only avaiation mag
: azine, you would find in the British Embassy in some far f
: lung outpost of empire :0)
:
:
:
:
:
: : Dave,
: :
: : I stick to aeroplane monthly because the historical arti
: cl
: : es are better (in my opnion), then I go for Flugzeug Cla
: ss
: : ic which is excellent. I try to read Avions now and then
: .
: : Classic wings is really great but difficult to get hold
: of
: : in Sweden - so you have to either subscribe or miss it,
: n
: : o spontanious buys when you're in the mood for it.
: :
: : When it comes to american magazines, I haven't been able
: t
: : o find one which is good enough to warrant the cost (in
: my
: : opinion again of course ;-). I did subscirbe to Warbird
: s
: : International for some time but...
: :
: : Somehow I believe that there must be a market for a maga
: zi
: : ne about warbirds and only warbirds without a specific g
: eo
: : grafical orientation but with the aim of covering what h
: ap
: : pens all over the world. Maybe Classic Wings can move in
: t
: : o fill that space?
: :
: : /Mikael
: :
: : :
: : : Now that Warbirds Worldwide is sadly no longer with us
: -
: : I
: : : am curious to know what
: : : publications all you warbird / vintage aircraft fanat
: ic
: : s

: : : I doubt any one would disagree that the WW Journal was
: t
: : he
: : : most in-depth and
: : : factual publication around on the subject - so what i

: : : my friends around the
: : : globe send me an occasional copy of their local magazi
: ne
: : s
: : : [ Jet & Prop , Flugzeug

: : : My reason for subscribing to ?Flypast? is because of t
: he
: : f
: : : requency and the news pages
: : : .... in my opinion the news section is better than Aer
: op
: : la
: : : ne Monthly - although the
: : : historical articles seem better in the latter !
: : : ?Classic Wings ? is outstanding and over the last few
: ye
