In reply top Re: Which Magazines ....????? posted by Mikael Olrog on Sun Sep 09, 2001 04:55:54 AM

Some nice points raised......

Now, an aviation magazine, that just deals with Warbirds Worldwide, nothing else, just the facts ma'am? (apologies Joe Friday)..... that would be something else.

OK, let's assume, that the Magazine is based in N New Zealand, with an editor, passionate and very knowledgable about his field.

Lets also assume, that the editor , would like to expand his readership dramatically as all editors of course do.

Now these are just some suggestions and ideas Graham

1. Rename the magazine to "World and Classic Wings Down Under" with "World" appearing as freehand script diagonally across the word classic, so telling your readership, from the first point of contact, (The cover) what you're all about.

2.Translate sections of the Magazine, into a territory specific language. Japan is rapidly becoming a very important market, but with the exception of "Koku-Fan" I don't really see much going on there, same for France, Germany and Scandinavia. Don't forget, Spanish is still a very important language too.

3. In conjunction with point 2. Place more content on the web. Maybe, just maybe, the print version of the magazine, should act as a "Teaser" for the riches on the website.Your website, is under re-construction now, why not start?

4. Have regular contributors, for the "Secret History" and History sections. People such as Carl-Fredrick Geust (Under the Red Star), etc.

5. How to pay for this? Exclusive content is always chargeable. In the early days, i would recommend placing a "gisted translator " on the site. Many of these are free, with a lot of language coverage. Approach your market, in their own language, and push the magazine at the same time.

6. A quarterly CD-Rom is produced, with all the exciting parts on board. Interviews in Real Video, Rebuilds, photographs, articles, Air Show reports etc. The delivery can be either CD-ROM or Internet download via a secure server, for those with "Turbo nutter" connections. If the content promised is good enough, and EXCLUSIVE to you, people will buy, especially if the price, is a "no-brainer"

7. Readership, is measured by downloads, not by hits. If your readership, is starting to become dramatic, then you have warbird owners by the goolies, not the other way round. Like the Music world, certain magazines, are the "Place to be seen" Warbird owners and operators, appreciate you can turn them into stars, but only if the readership is good enough, so, strive to become the "Rolling Stone" of the Warbird world.

8. Yes, it will require more server pages, and more cost, but bandwith is coming down in price all the time. If the "Magazine" is published online once a month, with teasers throughout the month, on a constantly updated "News page" with "More on this in our January issue" Price $5.00, d/load from website or buy cd-rom then it will happen.

9.If you make the majority of the content web-based, then you can cut certain people ot of the delivery chain and your pocket..... errrrrrr distributors etc. I know there is nothing more depressing, than sale or return!

10. The actual content of the site, is up to you to decide, but, in my travels around the net, i have seen some SERIOUS websites, which are only in a foreign language... www.bf109.com and unsere-luftwaffe.de as two examples.

There is a lot of Polish stuff too. Invite these people to become regular contributors, in exchange for giving their wesites a quick plug.

at the end of it all Graham, it's up to you, but Classic could become the magazine, that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

But , if you decide to do it, can we do the website? "Much cheapness effendi" -lol

Oh, and I like Flypast, cos Ken is a good bloke, and Aeroplane monthly, because it feels like the only avaiation magazine, you would find in the British Embassy in some far flung outpost of empire :0)
