He's quite keen on them too, but at that age he still has difficulty telling them apart from Lancasters. He's getting there though, he knows Lancs have round tails, and Hali's have square ones. Can't quite understand the concept of Merlins and Hercs yet though... ;)

He's also got quite a good grasp of the European Air War circa 1939-45. Lancasters are 'good ones', and because they have RAF roundels, or 'round things' painted on the side it follows that all other aircraft with 'round things' must be the 'Lancasters friends'.

A couple of months ago, we saw Black Six sitting under S-Sugar's wing at Hendon and I told him (in basic terms) that Messerschmitts used to shoot at Lancasters. So he now says that all aircraft with crosses on are 'naughty ones', because they shoot at Lancasters.

Next to Black Six, there is a B17. I told him that these used to shoot at Messerschmitts, and so he now understands that the ones with stars on the sides are 'good ones', because they shoot at the 'naughty ones'. And of course, if the ones with stars are 'good ones', they must also be the 'Lancasters friends'.

Imagine the fun we had that afternoon - for anyone visiting Hendon over Easter this year, I was the exasperated Dad whose son was happily using his new-found knowledge by declaring to anyone in earshot; "That's a good one with round things, and that's a naughty one with crosses and its naughty because it shoots the Lancaster, and that's a good one with a star and it's the Lancasters friend because it shoots the naughty one with crosses!"

I think I've created a monster....
