Two factors reduced the effectiveness of the pre-invasion bombardment of the defences (notoriously difficult to suppress well dug-in defenders anyway)
1) For security reasons twice as much ordnance was expended outside the Overlord area than within it. So effectively operating with 2/3 of our assets not entering into the equation.
2) Sand has an incredible cushioning effect on bomb explosions. Any account of Dunkirk will tell you this explains the surprisingly low casualities on the beaches. You needed to hit those fortifications spot on, near enough wasn't good enough.
