Do you know if it WAS an RF-4? I can't think of anything else.
I was sitting in the back of a PA-28 once with two PPLs sitting in the front, both staring intently at the handheld GPS wondering whether we were on course. We were - Aylesbury was underneath us at the time, as per flightplan - well, track marked on the sectional; trouble was there was a steady stream of light aircraft heading the other way at our alt - possibly with two PPLs staring intently... The other back seater (yes it was an Archer, not a Warrior!) and I were peering over the heads and panel in front trying to spot other traffic before we hit them... Can't say I was too happy!
You are right, too many stats for which there are few excuses, and in the current climate blundering into the wrong airspace might get one in to worse trouble than one can imagine.
Me, I like maps, reasonable viz, and a clear idea of where I am going and what to expect en-route: GPS/GNSS is very nice but, as you imply, if it all goes down...
