Well, my experience of modern use of gliders, especially Touring Motor Gliders, is that they usually are fitted with GNSS including moving map and airspace.
Some pilots go flying without bringing a map and younger pilots never learn how to solve a wind triangle and that means no backup.
There is also the probability that the compass hasn?t been deviated since the GNSS was fitted so, if there is an electrical failure they are totally lost.
If You fly from France to Switzerland you should have the sun to your right or right rear quarter, ending up in Barcelona means the opposit so, the pilot didn?t have a clue. If there was an overcast hiding the sun he/she should probably not have made the flight in the first place, I mean mountainous terrain ahead.
I?m sorry for giving this "lecture" in this space but, in my spare time I work with flight safety and accident investigations where any kind of glider is involved. There was a happy ending to this incident but it could easily have ended in the statistics ......
