Hi Matt,
Cheers for the encouragement, and sorry I didn't see this earlier I was dragged away over the weekend by my family. The remains of Elsie are in Sweden, outside a small city called Porjus, and yes the remains are in good condition. From what I can gather corrosion is minimal, as the arctic climate has kept everything nice.
I know the project is a huge undertaking, but I don't let the fact bother me. If this turns out to be the only recovery I ever do, so be it, it's worth it.
I don't want to split the wreck, which is why it has to be an all or nothing job, but if I can get her back to the UK the tail is where I'll start as it is most intact.
The only problem with recovery at the moment is nobody will tell me who owns the land she is sitting on, they keep sending me in circles, so I am going to go over there and find out.
There is one thing I can think of at the moment that you can help me with. I am trying to track down the surviving crew or relatives. The pilot of Elsie was a Flight Lt Daniel William Carey, known as 'Bill' Carey on 617. He died in a car accident in the 1980's, but I am trying to find his relatives, I think they ought to at least know what is happening with Elsie.
Cheers
Richard
