The last XP-40Q was lost in the 1947 Thompson Trophy Race. Piloted by Bell test pilot Skip Ziegler. There wasn't many common parts in the XP-40Q. It had the same landing gear but the wing panels were different and it was, at least in is later stages, power by a V-1710 G6 engine. Was a good airplane---probably the best of the P-40 line, but the government didn't put it into production because Curtiss would have to stop the assembly line for six months to a year to retool.
