This was posted on a Spit site and forwarded to me by Ben Gilbert. Note it says 12 airframes [ this amount was mentioned when an ad was posted for the sale of these aircraft on Barnstormers a couple of years ago !!]

URGENT HELP WANTED
IT IS believed that 12 new Spitfire MkXIVs were buried in their transport crates at Mingaladon airfield in Burma between
August 1945 and April 1946. Originally intended for 273 Squadron to replace their MkvIIIs they were buried up to 25 feet
deep. The original source fo the story comes from America where two of the five witnesses had actually buried the crates -
they were believed to be Seabees or American Pioneer Corps troops.
Eye witnesses or others with ANY knowledge including the location of the buried aircraft in this event are asked to directly
contact
Mr David Cundall,
Dirtness Bridge Farm,
Crowle,
Scunthorpe DN17 4BP,
Great Britain.
Mr Cundall has visited the site, using modern technology to search, but the site is littered with PSP, Spitfire parts and other
aircraft scrap but the digs so far have failed to locate the crated aircraft. His next visit is scheduled for April/May 2001 and any
information which will help pinpoint the precise area would be invaluable. The map which is shown here may help to jog your
memory further.
