"Now it gets to the really difficult bit! Over the thirty odd years since the end of the Battle of Britain film, ?The Warbird Era?, seven airworthy Spitfires have been involved in fatal flying accidents and one has been totally consumed in a hanger fire. In some cases the impact and fire damage was so great that not even the current technology could consider them salvageable for anything but the most minor of components. At least two of the aforementioned, however, could technically fit in to the ?airworthy/under repair? category. Although I am sure there will much heated debate, there will be a time in the future, some few years yet, when the grief is but healed and all parties are comfortable with the situation, that one or two of these aircraft will re-emerge to fly again. I believe it will be honourable and I believe it will be the right decision, but it will be a close call".
It arrived back in the UK - 2 August 2001
