G'day Paul,
Mustangs were used as part of the nuclear experiments at Emu, South Australia. One of these was (illegally) flown out after some work was carried out on site. The rest supposedly found their way to the States, and their final fate isn't really known.
There is a continuing rumour of some Spitfires that were buried in mineshafts around Oakey, Queensland. To date, I don't believe any substantiation has been provided. Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers,
Matt
