Whirlwind P7002 off Dungeness

Posted by MM on Fri Oct 12, 2001 04:19:40 AM

I've posted this up here because the way Tony is posting like a MAD ONE...this'll be off the page by lunchtime!!!!

Anyway, found a bit more on P7002, touch of confucious about the date though....if you say it was 14th April Paul??

And I quote:-

"Such a job occurred on 4 April 1943,"........

........" McClure (P7096), Dugdale (P7002), Pilot Officer Smith (P6997) and Woodhouse (P6986), again escorted by 609 Typhoons, sweeping the same area (le Touqet/Boulogne) again. The Whirlwinds were flying very low as usual, when all of a sudden a white spray indicated a misjudgement of height. Dugdale had hit the sea with his propellors. He tried to gain height but was unsuccessful and had to ditch five miles off Dungeness. He got clear of the aircraft and was picked up about five minutes (!!)later by an ASR launch - being back in the UK before the return of the squadron"

Lucky bugger he was eh!!??

Basic history of P7002:-

To 263 Sqn 13.3.41.
Returned to works for repair 21.12.41.
To 18 MU 30.6.42.
To 137 Sqn 2.2.43. as SF-W.
Ditched after misjudgement of height 4.4.43.

HMMMMM....sounds like a good one doesn't it...and much closer to home in British waters.

Well that's two , including P7064 off Le Touquet Boulogne, that would DEFINITELY be worth investigating for a potential swap with the RAFM.

Why do I get the horrible feeling though that someone is already investigating or has already investigated them, and absolutely everything other plane wreck we've mentioned so far, and is sitting reading this and laughing their heads off at us folks who like to talk openly and are a "bit behind on the forums"..............hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

BUT, just imagine the wonderful sight of four Whirlwinds escorted by Typhoons flying ten(?)feet off the sea....

it makes me want to go get 'em.......

Anyone know how to do it?
I don't think we can wait much longer to rescue them....whatever's left......
