From the 57Rescue forum
.....Many years ago my mother worked with an ex-RAF serviceman who flew in Halifax's during WW2 (I think he was a tail gunner). He was shot down and thankfully survived ,I'm not to sure about the rest of the crew and whether they survived. Anyway during the eighties(?) his aircraft was recovered from the Solent(?), has anyone got any further information on this. He was presented with a couple of the spark plugs from an engine from this aircraft and was kind enough to give me one which I still have to this day and I would just like a bit more info on this aircraft..........
.........I have found out more info since my first post which is:
The engines at least were recovered from the sea off Slapton Sands in Devon, not the Solent, the Halifax crashed after being hit by 'friendly fire' (a RAF bomb smashed through the wings and knocked out two of the engines). It was returning from a sortie over Cherbourg on June 6/7 1944. All of the crew survived by baling out. I believe the airmen were from 426 Squadron based at Linton-On-Ouse. I have managed to unearth some photo's of the squadron taken in Sept 1944 plus various other photo's. Anyone have any further info?...........
Guys and gals,
There were no replies ont the 57Rescue forum. Does anyone have more information concering this recovery?
Cheers
