Two men were killed in a plane crash shortly after takeoff from a Gainesville airport, according to Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic.
A vintage World War II AT-6 trainer airplane carrying two men went down in a wooded area after taking off from Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville, Ga., authorities said.
The AT-6 went down just 400 feet short of the runway, authorities said.
Witnesses said they could see white smoke coming from the back of the plane after takeoff. They said the plane then sharply veered and crashed.
One witness said he ran from his nearby job at a contracting company to the crash site and tried to help the passengers. He said there was nothing he could do because it was too late to save the two men.
One of the men onboard normally flies with his wife, however he did not do so on Monday. She supposedly arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.
The identities of those killed have not yet been released. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified.
