but they appear to be test-fitting the two halves of Station 4 (IIRC) together. The upper and lower edges of the fuselage skinning had an overlapping flange which provided a base to rivet together, and the leading edge of each section had a wider flange through which the stringers were passed. I've got several publications (original, ca. 1939) which show repair methods and construction details of the 109E, and it's really quite an interesting structure.

Incidentally, I've got a full page on 2023 over at the Lair for those who are interested, this includes the "puzzle" that was laid out after recovery...good Lord, what a mess!
