I'm catching up after the weekend, so sorry for the late interest.

I would guess it all comes down to how well museums "get along". Is it constructive or inhibitive competition? What I mean is if museum A has something that museum B needs, and visa versa, you might think that a trade could take place, thus alowing a airframe to get an engine that it needs (the example you used). Now if the relationship between the two museums are bad, then the trade is not likely to take place.

Another thing to consider is that some museums build collections of engines. If I had a rare engine as part of my engine collection, I am not sure if I would want to trade it away, since it would be a prized posession.

An interesting question you posed here.

Mike
