P-51G mustang

Hi all,
For many many years it is known that John Morgan is restoring the prototype XP-51G at La Canada, California.
I remember reading many years ago that it was saved while on its way to the smelter. Apparently it was spotted on the back of a truck, the person (don't know if it was Mr Morgan himself) saw it, turned the car and followed the truck after which a deal was struck.
It was also mentioned that the airframe consisted of the centre-fuselage and center wings.
Does anyone have more information what the remains really consists of and what progress has been made towards restoring her to airworthy condition the past decades or two. I can imagine that parts for a one-off prototype are as scarce as hen's teeth.
